What is Faith?
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
the conviction of things not seen.”

the conviction of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1 NRSV
Faith is a term that resonates deeply across different cultures and religions, yet it is often challenging to define succinctly. For many, faith is a cornerstone of their spiritual and personal lives, shaping their actions, thoughts, and interactions with others.
Faith transcends religious boundaries and finds its place in everyday life. It is the driving force behind hope, resilience, and the ability to overcome adversity. According to a Pew Research Center study, 55% of Americans consider religion to be very important in their lives, underscoring the widespread influence of faith. Moreover, faith communities often provide a support network, helping in times of need.
Many profess to be a person of faith, but not religious. There is a desire to be faithful, but not to be part of organized religion. The decision to explore faith independently is a way of distancing themselves from the negative aspects of organized religion. This could include the actions of religious leaders, the exclusion of certain groups, or the rigid rules and regulations that some organized religions impose.

Percolating on Faith - Faith and Doubt
|
Not everyone experiences faith in the same way. As a matter of fact, some find themselves in a crisis of faith, while others have decided to discard faith altogether... often because of a disconnect between what they were taught and what they have come to know. But what if doubt and questioning were a good thing? Is that even possible? Well, according to guests Tony and Charmaine Chvala-Smith, not only is it possible, it is often healthy and helpful as we navigate our spiritual journey.

You are seen and you are known in all the good ways ... and, you are part of us. These are the “take away” words of Tony and Charmaine Chvala-Smith in this second part of their conversation with host, Blake Smith. If you find yourself – in the past, now, or in the future – in what you consider a time of crisis or doubt with regards to your faith journey, you are likely to find this conversation uplifting and encouraging ... not to change, but to recognize that there is a safe space for you in Community of Christ. Even if you self-identify as agnostic or atheist, grab a cup of coffee and settle in to see how and where you fit in this sacred community.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill," and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

Christian faith requires whole-life stewardship modeled after the life, teaching, and ministry of Jesus Christ.
Are you a Person of Faith but not Religious?
The decision to explore their faith independently is a way of distancing themselves from the negative aspects of organized religion. This could include the actions of religious leaders, the exclusion of certain groups, or the rigid rules and regulations that some organized religions impose.
Being a Person of Faith but not Religious can also mean that an individual is seeking a more personal connection with their spirituality. Without the influence of organized religion, they may feel that they have the freedom to explore their beliefs and develop their own relationship with a higher power.
However, being a Person of Faith but not Religious doesn't necessarily mean that an individual is entirely disconnected from religious traditions. Many people who fall into this category still draw inspiration from religious texts or teachings and may incorporate aspects of organized religion into their personal beliefs and practices.

“For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
