As a denomination we believe in
Sacredness of Creation and encourage disciples and congregations to seek out ways in which they can nurture God’s creation. “The earth, lovingly created as an environment for life to flourish, shudders in distress because creation’s natural and living systems are becoming exhausted from carrying the burden of human greed and conflict. Humankind must awaken from its illusion of independence and unrestrained consumption without lasting consequences.”

Plastic Bag Recycling Project
Wise decisions and actions today will ensure the future and well-being of the planet for future generations.
In Community of Christ we seek to find ways to reduce the human footprint on the environment.
Plastic Bag Recycling is a Sustainable Solution for a Greener Future and is consistent with the Community of Christ Sacredness of Creation Enduring Principle.
Are you looking for simple yet impactful ways to contribute to a healthier environment? Look no further than our Bags to Benches plastic bag recycling project. By engaging in this eco-friendly practice, you not only help reduce waste but also play a vital role in promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship. Waste Reduction and Environmental Impact: Recycling plastic bags aids in waste reduction by diverting them from landfills, thereby reducing landfill waste and the associated environmental issues.
The environmental impact of plastic pollution is mitigated when plastic bags are recycled and transformed into reusable materials or other products. It promotes the concept of a circular economy where materials are reused, reducing the need for new raw materials and minimizing waste generation. Community Involvement and Environmental Responsibility: Our plastic bag recycling project encourages community involvement in waste management practices, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among individuals.
It serves as a recycling initiative that brings our community together to work towards a common goal of positive environmental change. Through recycling plastic bags, we engage in ethical consumption practices and promote earth-friendly behaviors. |
Resource Preservation and Green Living: This project aligns with the principles of green living by advocating for sustainable development and resource efficiency.
By raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices, plastic bag recycling paves the way for a greener, more eco-conscious society. Our Bags to Bench recycling project is not just about disposing of plastic bags; it is a powerful tool for driving environmental change and fostering a more sustainable future. By embracing recycling initiatives and promoting sustainability in our community, we can all play a part in creating a cleaner, healthier planet for generations to come.
This plastic recycling project is done in conjunction with Trex, a composite decking company. Trex sponsors a plastic collection challenge in which a group or organization that collects one thousand pounds of plastic film receives a free “polylumber” bench from Trex in appreciation for the community’s recycling efforts.
|
Our goal is to place a bench, made from recycled plastic, hopefully more than one, in our Community Peace Garden. Consider joining the Topeka Community of Christ congregation in this recycling project and make a positive impact on the environment.
|
We are in the process of collecting plastic for our recycling project.
if you would like to join us in this environmental action.

Environmental Justice
Environmental Justice
Here are some actions that can be taken by individuals and congregations to help address the challenge of climate change and protect the environment.
Reducing energy consumption by using energy-efficient appliances and lighting, turning off electronics when not in use, and using public transportation, biking, or walking instead of driving alone.
Supporting renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydro power by investing in or advocating for their use.
|
Reducing waste by recycling, composting, and minimizing the use of single-use plastics and packaging.
Supporting policies and legislation that aim to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment.
Educating others about the importance of environmental stewardship and encouraging them to take action.
By taking these steps, we can each play a role in being good stewards of God’s creation and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
The Earth Stewardship Team is a Community of Christ World Church Team that focuses on issues of environmental stewardship and development and guide, educate, and engage us in the ongoing stewardship of Earth’s resources. Visit our Environmental-Justice website for information and resources.

Project Zion Podcast A26 - Awaken to God’s
Presence: Sacredness of Creation
Community of Christ counts “Sacredness of Creation” as one of its Enduring Principles. We often hear exclamations noting creation’s beauty and the ways in which our lives are touched by it. But how often do we take the time to really take it in… to acknowledge the elements of fire, air, water, and earth…and, to say thank you for all that it offers us. Join host Wendy Brian as she guides listeners in a meditation that honors the sacredness of creation and offers thanks for the unique gift of each of its elements.
