Doorstep Topeka
Topeka Community of Christ works to Abolish Poverty & End Suffering by reaching out through compassionate ministries, in partnership with other faith communities and organizations, such as Doorstep, that serve the poor and hungry and stop conditions that diminish the worth of persons.
Doorstep provides Topekans with the support they need to live fuller, more self-sufficient lives. From combatting hunger to offering individuals and families the services and resources they need to enjoy independent lifestyles, Doorstep is committed to extending a helping hand to our forgotten friends and neighbors in their time of need.
|
In addition to our tithes which fund Community of Christ operations, programs and missions; we partner with other Churches in Topeka, Kansas and charitable organizations, to support the ministry provided by Doorstep Topeka.
We do this by providing volunteer service, tangible goods and financial support to Doorstep. For additional information regarding how you can assist Doorstep, please contact Ruth May who serves as our congregation's liaison with Doorstep Topeka.

Current Doorstep News
Another year has begun, and we have hit the ground running! Each year brings new challenges, new experiences, and often many new blessings for Doorstep! We are looking at having the Doorstep Annual Banquet & Quilt Drawing this year after a 3-year COVID hiatus; perhaps a food sale, and the 6th Annual Neighbor Helping Neighbor Walk/5K Fun Run will be Sunday, October 1st!
As always we know we could not do all of our services and activities without the help of our member congregations, volunteers, and the community! We have been here over 56 years, and we still operate on “neighbors helping neighbors”!
We have decided going forward we will no longer give out clothing and shoes in our Christmas Adoption Project. We will continue to use the distribution model we started due to COVID, and provide gift cards in lieu of clothing. The only exceptions are: NEW pajamas for kids, and NEW hoodies for men, women, and teens… As winter clearance sales are going on, look for warm pajamas from newborn to sizes 18 for kids (boys & girls), and hoodies (sweatshirts) in all sizes, colors, sports teams etc. (sizes small – 5x)
Finally, Thank You to everyone who donated money, blankets, games, puzzles, gifts, school supplies, hygiene items, and their time for Doorstep’s Christmas Adoption Project this past December! We assisted a total of 260 households with 822 individuals!

SouperBowl Sunday is February 12th and we are asking our member congregations to collect soup and crackers again this year to help stock our food pantry! Watch for sales, and gather your donations! We can use all varieties of soup, and crackers. A successful SouperBowl Sunday can stock our pantry with these items into the spring months! Our goal for 2023 is 5,000 pounds = 2.5 ton! |

Outreach International
We work to Abolish Poverty & End Suffering by reaching out through compassionate ministries, in partnership with organizations, such as Outreach International, that serve the poor and hungry and stop conditions that diminish the worth of persons.
In addition to our tithes which fund Community of Christ operations, programs and missions; the Topeka Community of Christ congregation also provides funds to support the ministry of Outreach International as we work in partnership with others to Abolish Poverty and End Suffering.
Some think the end to poverty is a pipe dream. Outreach International has nearly 40 years of experience working alongside our community partners around the world that says otherwise.
|
Outreach International believes when communities work together, they can overcome the challenges of chronic poverty.
Their work supports groups who construct new water wells, establish low-interest loan programs, repair roads, grow vegetables, and much more. It empowers people to lift themselves, sustainably, into a future defined by opportunity. We invite you to join with us in supporting the ministry provided by this organization.

We work to #AbolishPovertyEndSuffering by reaching out through compassionate ministries, in partnership with other faith communities and organizations that serve the poor and hungry and stop conditions that diminish the worth of persons.
The third Sunday of each month, our friends and members bring their loose change, which they have saved during each month, for our Pennies for Africa special offering.
|
This special offering is contributed to the Community of Christ Africa Mission Centers to be utilized by the mission centers, as may be needed. Since this special offering was started in 1997, the Topeka Community of Christ congregation has contributed over $20,000 through our Pennies for Africa offering.

The first Sunday of each month, all undesignated offerings received are forwarded to Community of Christ Headquarters for Community of Christ Abolish Poverty & End Suffering Ministries. In addition givers can specifically designate their offerings for this purpose at any time.
|
Oblation was established to help the church be faithful to its commission to care for the poor and needy (Doctrine and Covenants 42:8).
The law and practice of the church since this action of the 1917 Conference (GCR 773) has been to receive funds during all Communion services for the express purpose of the care of the poor and needy. |

Prayer for Peace
“Sue for peace, not only the people that have smitten you, but also to all people; and lift up an ensign of peace, and make a proclamation for peace unto the ends of the earth; and make proposals for peace, unto those who have smitten you, according to the voice of the Spirit which is in you, and all things shall work together for your good; therefore, be faithful, and, behold, and lo, I am with you even unto the end. Even so. Amen.” D&C 102:11
Daily Prayer for Peace
The Daily Prayer for Peace is a powerful witness of Community of Christ’s commitment to peace. Such regular, public expression symbolizes the church’s unrelenting pursuit of peace as God’s intent for a bruised and divided world.
The Daily Prayer for Peace worship service is held at 1PM (central time USA), 365 days a year. Each day a prayer is offered for a specific country based on the World Council of Churches’ ecumenical prayer cycle, which joins our prayers with that of Christians throughout the world.

Please visit the Community of Christ website for additional information regarding the Daily Prayer for Peace.
The Topeka Community of Christ Congregation includes a Prayer for Peace in it's Sunday Worship Service. Our Peace Candle is located in front of our pulpit. Please join with us in prayer from wherever you are.

Keeping Connected - Topeka Community of Christ - January 30, 2023
This has been a very busy week! Here’s what has been going on:
Last Thursday, January 26:
JoAnn Sharp passed away last weekend and the congregation provided a dinner for the Sharp family after services this past Thursday. A BIG THANKS to Sharon Kester, Beth Franklin, Ginny Fink, Pat Loar and Kay High for all their help. The family was appreciative to be able to gather together for visit.
Last Saturday, January 28th:
We had a nice turn out for the Supper and Movie Night. After a soup supper we enjoyed popcorn while watching the Pixar movie “Soul”. It is a very cute movie with a great message. This was the first intergenerational activity of the year with more fun to come. Special Thanks to Craig and Emily Hidy and Sharon Kester.
Upcoming events:
Sunday February 5th at 9:30am, Sunday School for the youth is returning! We really want to get the youth involved in Sunday School and other church activities so please plan to attend on time and bring your friends!
Sunday, February 5th and Sunday, February 12th Souper Bowl Sundays for Doorstep. Please bring cans of soup, crackers, or other non-perishable items to help restock Doorstep’s shelves. This time of year their shelves run low. If you bring your donations to church, we will ensure they get to Doorstep. If you take them to Doorstep, be sure to remember to tell them it is from the Topeka Community of Christ.
Sunday, February 12th at 5pm, we will celebrate Super Bowl Sunday with SOUPER Bowl Sunday! For this intergenerational activity we will gather at church for Supper (Soup, of course) and to watch the Super Bowl. If you’re a football fan, come and watch the game and cheer on the Chiefs . If you’re not into football, come and watch the commercials! Either way, come have a great time with your church family! If you can, plan to bring a can of soup, crackers, or other non-perishable items for Doorstep.
